Between 5/26 and 6/6 the Web Directory will undergo migration. Updates to profiles and departments are discouraged during this time. Richard Fabes is the John O. Whiteman Distinguished Professor of Child Development He is also the Director of Innovation for the Sanford Harmony Institute (https://harmonyinstitute.asu.edu/). His research interests include children's adjustment to school, school-based discipline, peer relationships, gender, and positive emotionality (hope, compassion, empathy). His teaching activities emphasize social-emotional development, peer relationships, and the translation of research for positive outcomes.
Fabes' current research involves a series of projects associated with children's relationships and how to improve those. He also is a senior principal investigator on research and grants related to the use of exclusionary discipline (suspension, expulsion) in schools and the disparities in its use. He is involved in a set of scientifically based projects designed to understand and enhance the relationships children have with each other and with important adults in their lives.
