Research

Dr. Campisano's broad research interests revolve around the environmental context of hominid evolution. Specifically, he is interested in characterizing ancient landscapes and their change across space and through time at varying degrees of resolution by integrating paleontological assemblages and depositional environments. This information provides a temporal-spatial environmental framework within which to test theories of hominid and faunal evolution. His research provides original insights into, and bridges important gaps between, the geologic and fossil hominid record. He has a strong commitment to active research and have participated in more then ten field projects at a half dozen hominid localities in Ethiopia, South Africa, and Kenya as well as Eocene sites in Texas. Dr. Campisano's research on the reconstruction of terrestrial paleoenvironments tends to be more problem-oriented than discipline-bounded and requires a broad-based approach in which he employs his background and skills in sedimentology, stratigraphy, geochronology, paleoclimatology and paleontology.

Interests

Paleoenvironmental reconstructions of terrestrial depositional systems
Hominoid and hominid evolution
Tephrostratigraphy and geochronology
Paleoecology of Plio-Pleistocene Old World mammals
Volcanic hazards in modern and paleo-landscapes

Current Projects

1) Geological research and paleoenvironmental analysis of the Plio-Pleistocene Hadar and Busidima Formations, Afar, Ethiopia (Hadar Research Project, Ledi-Geraru Research Project, Dikika Research Project).

2) Continental drilling of paleolake basins in Ethiopia and Kenya for environmental records relevant to hominin evolution (Northern Afar, W. Turkana, Lake Magadi, Baringo, Chew Bahir).
HSPDP

3) Construction of a geospatial database of the Hadar region (Ethiopia) to integrate disparate paleoanthropological and geological datasets for research, education, and conservation.
Hadar Geoinformatics Project

4) Refined geology and geochronology of the Eocene paleoprimate sites in Trans-Pecos, Texas.
Eocene of Texas

5) Modeling the potential effects of volcanism on paleogeography and ecologic stability at Plio-Pleistocene African hominin localities.
