Bio

Prof. Zayas is Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work at ASU. He is a socio-cultural anthropologist who specializes on socio-cultural strategies for health promotion among ethnic minorities in the US. Specifically, he is interested in how Latinos and African Americans in particular manage and cope with chronic medical conditions, especially asthma and diabetes. Dr. Zayas's research also addresses the development of a culturally grounded and quality-driven health care workforce to address health disparities. He is an ethnographer and qualitative research methods specialist.

Research Interests

Ethnomedicine, social determinants of health, health promotion among ethnic minority populations, health (care) inequities, development of a culturally competent health care workforce, utilization of complementary and alternative therapies; community development
