Bio

  

Mitzi M. Montoya is Vice President and University Dean of Entrepreneurship & Innovation at Arizona State University. She is a Professor in the Management Department of the W.P. Carey School of Business and serves on the board of the Center for Entrepreneurship. Dr. Montoya received her Ph.D. in Marketing and Statistics and a B.S. in Applied Engineering Science, both from Michigan State University.

 

Dr. Montoya is responsible for advancing ASU as a leader in entrepreneurship and innovation, including supporting student and faculty entrepreneurship, enhancing the entrepreneurial ecosystem, and driving innovative collaborative initiatives across ASU. Previously at ASU, Dr. Montoya served as Dean of the College of Technology & Innovation and Vice Provost of the ASU Polytechnic campus. She led the development of a new model for higher education that embedded hands-on, real-world projects in the curriculum in partnership with industry and the community. Dr. Montoya established ASU as a national leader in the growing maker movement and developed public-private partnerships to advance both higher education and the regional innovation system, including development of a public open prototyping facility that unites the community, local companies and the university. In Arizona, Dr. Montoya established the Aerospace & Defense Research Collaboratory, a state-wide platform for collaboration across the aerospace and defense supply chain and research institutions, and she currently leads ASU’s USAID-sponsored global training program for clean energy. Prior to joining ASU, Dr. Montoya spent 15 years at North Carolina State University where she held the Zelnak Chair in Marketing & Innovation in the Poole College of Management. At NC State University, she founded and led the Innovation Lab, a collaborative research and education initiative involving the management, design, engineering and textiles colleges in partnership with corporate sponsors.

 

Dr. Montoya is a former American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow. Her research focuses on innovation processes and strategies and the role of technology as an enabler of distributed team decision-making. She focuses on the dynamics and performance of globally distributed work teams. Her publications have appeared in Management Science, Journal of Marketing Research, Marketing Science, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Decision Sciences, MIS Quarterly, the Journal of Product Innovation Management, among others. She has been the recipient of competitive research grants from the National Science Foundation, US Department of Education, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Society of Information Management, Product Development and Management Association, Science Foundation of Arizona as well as foundation grants from several firms. She has taught undergraduate, graduate and executive courses in innovation and marketing strategy in the US, England, Brazil, Italy, Egypt, Kuwait, Russia, Japan, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Panama and Argentina.

 

Dr. Montoya serves as on the board of several startup ventures and has advised many organizations on topics related to innovation and marketing strategy. Her consulting experience includes work with organizations such as Center for Creative Leadership, EDUCAUSE, Xerox, Dow Chemical Company, IBM, MeadWestvaco, GlaxoSmithKline, Eli Lilly, Raytheon, Martin Marietta Materials, DaimlerChrysler, Cotton Incorporated, Koch/INVISTA, among others.
