Bio

Barbara A. Lafford (Ph.D. Cornell) is a Professor of Spanish in the School of International Letters and Cultures (College of Liberal Arts and Sciences) at Arizona State University (ASU). In addition to her professorial duties, Lafford has served as the Associate Dean of Extended Education and currently serves as Head of the Faculty of Languages & Cultures in the School of Letters and Sciences at the ASU Downtown Phoenix campus. Since arriving at ASU she has published in the areas of Spanish sociolinguistics, second language acquisition (SLA), Spanish applied linguistics, computer assisted language learning (CALL), and languages for specific purposes/experiential learning (see research interests section). Lafford has taught graduate courses on Spanish linguistics, sociolinguistics, second language acquisition, research methods in linguistics, the use of technology to teach second languages, Spanish for the professions, and Spanish applied linguistics. She has also worked with the Mary Lou Fulton Graduate School of Education, the School of Social Work, and the College of Nursing and Health Innovation to create Spanish courses focused on the needs of students in those fields, so they can interact effectively with the community they serve. Under her leadership, the School of Letters & Sciences created an undergraduate minor/certificate in Spanish for the Professions that is offered at the ASU Downtown Phoenix campus and online. Prof. Lafford has participated in her profession at the national level in several capacities. She has served as Associate Editor for the Applied Linguistics section of Hispania, Chair of the Board for CALICO (the Computer-Assisted Language Instruction Consortium), and she currently holds the post of Editor for the Monograph/Focus Issue Series of the Modern Language Journal.

Research Interests

Recent publications have focused on the effect of context on the SLA experience (with a focus on the acquisition of discourse and strategic competencies in study abroad and classroom environments, Lafford, 2004, 2006; Lafford & Collentine, 2006; Lafford & Uscinski, in press; Magnan & Lafford, 2012; Segalowitz et al., 2004), the interplay of social and cognitive factors on the language acquisition process (Lafford, 2006, 2007 [Focus Issue, MLJ]; Salaberry & Lafford, 2004), the acquisition of the second language lexicon (Lafford, Collentine, & Karp, 2003), computer-assisted language learning (Lafford & Lafford, 2005; Lafford, Lafford & Sykes, 2007; Lafford, 2009 [Focus Issue, MLJ]; Smith & Lafford, 2009), and the creation of professionally-focused Spanish language courses (King & Lafford, 2013; Lafford, 2012 [Focus Issue, MLJ]; Lafford & Petersen, 2007). Prof. Lafford has co-edited two significant volumes dealing with Spanish second language research and teaching (Lafford & Salaberry, 2003; Salaberry & Lafford, 2006) and a retrospective of Spanish Applied Linguistics in the 20th C (Lafford, 2000). She has also presented her research and has given workshops at national and international conferences in the fields of sociolinguistics, second language acquisition, computer-assisted language learning, and languages for specific purposes/experiential learning.
