BIO

I study patterns, processes and outcomes of class, gender and ethnic inequalities in contemporary U.S. society. A sociologist by training, I have been working for the past decade on interdisciplinary problems of social and environmental inequality brought about by rapid urbanization and climate change in central Arizona.

I’m the director of the Phoenix Area Social Survey, a project of the Central Arizona's Phoenix Long-Term Ecological Research project at ASU. This multi-year sample of households within neighborhoods stratified by socioeconomic variables and location, examines people's values, attitudes and behaviors concerning the local environment and the impact of income and ethnic residential segregation on social and physical environmental inequalities.

I am the principle investigator of a multi-faceted interdisciplinary research and education project on Urban Vulnerability to Climate Change.  I work with other social, natural, and health scientists to study the socio-ecological systems that amplify or mitigate heat-related health hazards for different socioeconomic and ethnic/racial groups in cities.  We examine the spatial structure of the urban heat island and how it has changed over time, how land cover mediates the relationship between household income and microclimate temperatures in urban neighborhoods, the scarcity of vegetation in low-income, minority neighborhoods, the relationship between temperature and heat-related morbidity/mortality, and how climate change is projected to affect health in hot cities.  This work gives us a unique perspective on climate injustice for vulnerable people in vulnerable places.

I currently teach an undergraduate course (cross-listed in the School of Human Evolution & Social Change and the School of Sustainability) about the impacts of industrial production systems on workers, communities and the natural environment, and I am developing a new course on climate change and society.  Graduate courses include social survey research methodology, environmental justice and the city, and urban health and environments.  I work with doctoral and master's students in several different degree programs at ASU.
