Research Interests

David Schaefer's research draws upon a network perspective to examine how social relations are patterned and subsequently affect individual opportunities and outcomes. Specifically, he is interested in network dynamics, including the mechanisms underlying the creation and evolution of social networks and how health factors such as obesity, depression, and smoking both contribute to network change and change as a product of network influence processes. Additional research considers how exchange networks contribute to the development of inequality, trust, and solidarity. He uses a combination of observational, experimental, and survey data combined with social network and agent-based models. Dr. Schaefer is the 2012 recipient of the Linton C. Freeman Award for Distinguished Scholarship from the International Network for Social Network Analysis.
