Bio

Dr. Flavio F. Marsiglia is Regents' Professor and the Distinguished Foundation Professor of Cultural Diversity and Health at the Arizona State University (ASU) School of Social Work. He is also the Director of the Southwest Interdisciplinary Research Center (SIRC).  SIRC is an exploratory center of excellence on minority health and health disparities research funded by the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

He received his Ph.D. in social work from the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University and his MSW from the School of Social Work at the University of the Republic in Uruguay.   Before starting his full time academic career, he was a school social worker with the Bilingual Multicultural Department and later he was a research scientist with the Cleveland Public Schools. In Arizona, Dr. Marsiglia has been Principal Investigator of numerous clinical research studies such as Familias Sanas/Healthy Families, a hospital-based intervention study aimed at improving the interconception care of Latina mothers funded by the Centers of Medicare/ Medicaid Services (HHS). In partnership with several Arizona school districts and with support from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) of the NIH, he and his collaborators developed and tested keepin’ it REAL – a substance abuse prevention Model Program for middle school students.  The manualized and ASU licensed intervention is now being implemented across the U.S. and internationally. Dr. Marsiglia was the Principal Investigator of a NIDA/NIH funded social work research infrastructure grant, starting SIRC in 2002. The current SIRC center grant funded by NIMHD/NIH is developing and testing new interventions addressing obesity among Latino youth, substance use prevention of recent Mexican immigrant youth through a family intervention and a prevention program for urban American Indian youth.

Dr. Marsiglia has authored and co-authored more than 120 peer-reviewed journal articles, numerous book chapters and has co-authored with Stephen Kulis a book entitled “Diversity, Oppression and Change: Culturally Grounded Social Work” now in its second edition.  He serves on numerous scientific editorial boards; he served on boards of national professional organizations such as the Society for Social Work and Research and the Institute for the Advancement of Social Work Research.  He also serves on NIH scientific review panels and other NIH special emphasis review panels. He is the president of the Association of Latina Latino Social Work Educators (ALLSWE).

Some of his most recent recognitions include the 2012 Community, Culture and Prevention Science Award granted by the Society for Prevention Research in recognition of “research that enhances the understanding, development, and adaptation of effective prevention strategies for traditionally underserved populations, including racial and ethnic groups.”  Since 2012, he is a member of the National Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare. In 2014, he received the Google Award for Diversity and Inclusion, Arizona State University.  The same year he joined the Inaugural Class of Fellows of the Society for Social Work and Research.

He coordinates an ongoing international scholars’ exchange program at SIRC and conducts research and training in partnership with universities in China, Guatemala, Mexico, Spain, Taiwan and Uruguay.  He is a Distinguished International Affiliate Professor of the Department of Sociology and Social Work, Jangxi University of Finance and Economics, Nanchang-China.  He is also an Affiliate Professor of the Graduate Program in Social Work and Social Sciences, Masters in Intervention Research, Universidad Pablo de Olavide in Seville, Spain.
