Bio

Dr. Chowell is an associate professor in the School of Human Evolution and Social Change, with affiliations in the Mathematical and Computational Modeling Sciences Center, the Center for Global Health, and the Center for Population Dynamics. He also holds an external affiliation as a Research Fellow at the Division of Epidemiology and Population Studies at the Fogarty International Center, NIH. Dr. Chowell received his Ph.D. in Biometry from Cornell University in 2005 and an Engineering degree from Universidad de Colima, Mexico in 2001. He was awarded the National Prize for Youth by the Government of Mexico in 2002, and has been selected by the financial magazine "Poder y Negocios" as one of 100 professors who were born in Mexico and are now teaching and making waves in the United States. Chowell's work lies at the interface of epidemiology, mathematics, modeling and statistics. For the last few years, his emphasis has been on the connection of mathematical and compuational models to real epidemic scenarios such as the 2009 A/H1N1 influenza pandemic to make inferences on transmission dynamics and the effects of public health intervention strategies.

Research Interests

Dr. Chowell is a mathematical epidemiologist in the School of Human Evolution and Social Change, with affiliations in t he Mathematical and Computational Modeling Sciences Center, the Center for Global Health, and the Center for Population Dynamics. He is also an associate researcher of the Multinational Influenza Seasonal Mortality Study (MISMS) of the Division of International Epidemiology and Population Studies, Fogarty International Center, NIH.

Dr. Chowell is a member of the Editorial Boards of BMC Medicine, BMC Infectious Diseases, BioMed Research International, the SIAM Undergraduate Research Online Journal, and PLoS ONE.
