Stephen M. Goodnick (M 1987; SM 1990; F 2004) received the B.S. degree in engineering science from Trinity University, San Antonio, TX, in 1977, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Colorado State University, Fort Collins, in 1979 and 1983, respectively.

He was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow with the Technical University of Munich, Munich, Germany, and the University of Modena, Modena, Italy, in 1985 and 1986, respectively. He was a faculty member from 1986 to 1997 with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon, and served as Chair and Professor of Electrical Engineering with Arizona State University, Tempe, from 1996 to 2005. He served as Deputy Dean for the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering during 2005-2006, served as Associate Vice President for Research for Arizona State University from 2006-2008, Director of the Arizona Institute for Nanoelectronics, and Director of the Arizona Initiative for Renewable Energy from 2006-2009, and is currently Deputy Director of ASU LightWorks.

He currently serves as President IEEE Eta Kappa Nu (HKN), Electrical and Computer Engineering Honor Society Board of Governors, in 2011. Prior to that he served as Vice President of IEEE-HKN Board of Governors, and served as Western Regional Director prior to that. He served as board member and President for the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Heads Association (ECEDHA) from 2001-2006, and was the recipient of the Robert M. Janowiak Outstanding Leadership and Service Award, Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Heads Association in 2008. He is presently the President Elect of the IEEE Nanotechnology Council. He served on the IEEE Fellows Committee in 2010 was the IEEE MTT Liaison to the IEEE Nanotechnology Council (2009-2010), and Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Nanoelectronics for the IEEE Nanotechnology Council, from 2003-2011. He recently served as General Chair for the 15th IEEE Si Nanoelectronics Workshop in Honolulu, USA, in June 2010. He served as the Program Chair for the 9th IEEE Conference on Nanotechnology, Genoa, Italy, August 2009, and the Program Chair for the 4th IEEE Conference on Nanotechnology, Munich, Germany, August 2004. He served as the Vice-Chair of the 2001 IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Symposium, Phoenix, AZ, in May 2001. He served as the Electron Device Society Representative for the IEEE Waves and Devices Chapter, Phoenix Section, from 1998-2008. Some of his main research contributions include analysis of surface roughness at the Si/SiO2 interface, Monte Carlo simulation of ultrafast carrier relaxation in quantum confined systems, global modeling of high frequency devices, full-band simulation of semiconductor devices, transport in nanostructures, and fabrication and characterization of nanoscale semiconductor devices. He received an IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society, Certificate of Recognition for Contributions as Vice-Chair of the 2001 MTT-S International Microwave Symposium and an IEEE Phoenix Section, Service Award, 2002. He has published over 200 refereed journal articles, books and book chapters and is a Fellow of IEEE (2004) for contributions to carrier transport fundamentals and semiconductor devices.
