Dr. Maria T. Allison is Vice Provost for Academic Excellence and Inclusion in the Office of the Executive Vice President and University Provost. Dr. Allison completed her bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of New Mexico and her Ph.D. at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. She taught high school for three years at Gallup High School, Gallup New Mexico. She is a professor in the School of Community Resources and Development.
Dr. Allison's scholarship focuses predominantly on the nature of cultural differences in play, sport, and leisure patterns within the U.S. Her current research and scholarly publications analyze the nature of organizational barriers to diversity in public and non-profit sectors. In her role as Executive Vice Provost and Dean, she has focused Graduate College initiatives on building the quality and diversity of ASU's graduate student population and creating institutional structures to facilitate interdisciplinary graduate education. She led the effort by the Graduate College to secure three Council of Graduate Schools' (CGS) awards including the CGS Ph.D. Completion project, the CGS Responsible Conduct of Research project, and sole national recipient of the 2004 CGS/Peterson Award for Inclusivity in Graduate Education.
As a social scientist, research activity has reflected both anthropological and sociological traditions. Research interests focus on the cross-cultural analyses of play, sport, and leisure. Early research activity included extensive fieldwork among the Native-American (e.g., Navajo), and survey research among African American and Hispanic populations. The goal of this work was to understand the nature of play, leisure and sport forms as vehicles of intra-cultural and intercultural interaction, expression, and exchange. Recent research focuses on the dynamics of organizational diversity. In particular this research analyzes the nature of current diversity-related issues and challenges that confront public and non-profit recreation-related community agencies.
