Bio

After receiving his Ph.D. from Ohio State University, Vince Waldron began his academic career at the University of Kentucky before coming to ASU in 1993. He studies challenging forms of communication in personal and work relationships.

Dr. Waldron has authored or co-authored five books, including one on the communication of forgiveness in romantic and family relationships. He also studies the ways employees communicate during emotional, stressful, or "risky" work situations, and co-authored a book examining a series of these situations, such as responding to negative feedback or persuading a resistant supervisor to accept new ideas.

His latest published book, edited with D. Kelley in 2015, examines the role of communication in forming moral commitments in a variety of personal relationships, such as those involving parents and adult children.  Under development is a book on the middle stages of long marriages with a particular focus on midlife challenges and practices that promote resilience.

Vince Waldron is co-director of the Family Communication Consortium (http://famcom.asu.edu/), an interdisciplinary group of ASU faculty and students committed to improving family communication through research, teaching, and community partnerships.

Dr. Waldron possesses a strong interest in the educational needs of older learners, including nontraditional college students. He connects with them as faculty coordinator for the Osher Reentry Scholarship Program, and previously served as the founding director of ASU's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. He also mentors graduate students in the M.A. in Communication Studies (MACS) program, which prepares students for careers as scholars and advocates in the public and private sectors. Dr. Waldron is a former chair of the Interpersonal Communication Division of the National Communication Association (NCA) and has served on the editorial boards of several major journals, such as Communication Research and the  Journal of Applied Communication Research .
