Differential equations, Dynamical systems

Eric Kostelich is a professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. He received his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Maryland in College Park. Prior to his arrival at ASU, Prof. Kostelich was in the Center for Nonlinear Dynamics in the Department of Physics at the University of Texas at Austin.

**Research**

Professor Kostelich's research interests are in applications of nonlinear dynamics. One of his principal projects regards data assimilation, the process by which the current state of a complex dynamical system (such as a numerical weather prediction model) is estimated from a collection of noisy observations and uncertain forecasts. He also has interests in mathematical biology, particularly modeling and predicting the dynamics of malignant brain tumors.

**Special projects at ASU**

Professor Kostelich directs the Computational Science Training for Undergraduates in the Mathematical Sciences program at ASU, which is funded by the National Science Foundation. This program provides intensive summer research experiences and a research seminar during the academic year for selected mathematics majors.
