Bio

Michael Kuby is a professor of geographical sciences and urban planning at ASU, where he has taught since 1988. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, US Department of Energy, World Bank, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and NASA. He is lead author of the interactive textbook, Human Geography in Action, published by John Wiley & Sons, and co-editor of the 2009 and 2015 Arizona Town Hall background reports on Transportation. In 2011-2013 he co-authored the Transportation chapter in the National Climate Assessment. He is currently Area Editor for Location Science for Networks and Spatial Economics and is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Transport Geography and the International Regional Science Review. Previously, he served as Chair and Secretary/Treasurer of the Transportation Geography Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers. He is also faculty sponsor of Gamma Theta Upsilon (the Geography Honor Society) and the ASU Men’s Ultimate Frisbee club.

He has recently published papers in the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, Journal of Transport Geography, Transportation Research Part D: Transport and the Environment, and the European Journal of Operational Research.

Research Interests

Kuby develops new models and decision support tools for sustainable energy and transport systems, such as for optimal facility location and network design. Recent work has focused on optimal pipeline networks for carbon capture and storage and optimal networks of alternative-fuel station for hydrogen, CNG, LNG, and fast EV charging. In addition to developing spatial optimization models, he also studies empirical data on energy, transportation, sustainability, and economic geography using statistics and GIS. Recent studies include spatial refueling patterns of CNG and gasoline drivers in Los Angeles (funded by NSF), energy conservation in buildings (as part of the Energize Phoenix project funded by DOE), coal use and CO2 emissions in China, and retail geography in the U.S. (with PhD student Larry Joseph). Rail transit has been another research direction, including predicting light-rail ridership and understanding the effects of climate and weather on rail transit.
