Bill Miller spent his early developmental years running around in the hardwood forests of central Indiana where he began his infatuation with the outdoors and natural sciences. Following several years in the U.S. Army he returned to college in Washington State where he continued his pursuit of knowledge of natural sciences earning a BS in Range Management with emphasis in Wildlfe Management, from Washington State University. Realizing that he needed to expand his knowledge base in order to pursue his interest in wildlife he obtained a MS in Forest and Range Science, studying Deer Habitat Selection and Nutrition in the Okanogon Highlands of Washington. Recognizing his need to further understand the complexities of animal nutrition lead him to obtaining his PhD. in Animal Sciences focusing on the energy metabolism of grazing animals.
Dr. Miller joined the faculty at ASU in 1984 and has continued to pursue his interest in Natural Resources and Wildlife Mangement in both his teaching and research. Dr. Miller is a member of The Wildlife Society, the Society for Range Mangement, and the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.
The emphasis of my research has been focused on real world wildlife issues of habitat selection and utilization. I have been involved in numerous studies that have centered on the understanding of those factors regulating wildlife utilization of their habitat, and how manipulation of those factors can enhance wildlife populations. The majority of my research effort has been and remains focused on large ungulates such as elk, deer, pronghorn, and bighorn sheep, with some involvement in large carnivores. I have developed a strong research capability for determination and analysis of wildlife diets and nutrient quality. Similarly, I am actively involved in several studies surrounding the application of GIS and remote sensing to the evaluation of wildlife habitat and the potential expansion of these technologies into the area of habitat suitability analysis.
