Bio

Since 2006, Dr. Mari E. Koerner has served as Professor and Dean of the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago in Curriculum and Instruction. She has held several administrative positions, including Associate Dean of the College of Education at Roosevelt University in Chicago and Director of Teacher Education and Chair of the Curriculum and Instruction Department at the University of Massachusetts Boston (UMB). During her tenure as Dean, ASU’s education programs were combined into the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College dedicated to transforming teacher preparation, enriching Arizona’s schools and preparing the next generation of education leaders and scholars. ASU’s teacher education programs received Best Practice Awards in 2007 for Effective Partnerships and in 2009 for Innovative Use of Technology from the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education.  ASU’s education graduate programs have been ranked among the best by U.S. News & World Report for 12 consecutive years.

Dr. Koerner serves on the Advisory Board for Teach For America;, Advisory Council for Rodel Charitable Foundation and on the Board of Directors for Arizona Business and Education Coalition. She is involved in the community as a Trustee on the Board of Directors for the Desert Botanical Garden and as a member of the Board of Directors for the Children’s Museum of Phoenix. Dr. Koerner received a 2010 Outstanding Achievement and Contribution award from the university’s Commission on the Status of Women

Dr. Koerner is currently the Principal Investigator of two major grants from the U.S. Department of Education, awarded to the College:  Teacher Quality Partnership grant, for $33.8 million and the Teacher Incentive Fund award for $43.4 million.  Both establish partnerships with schools all over Arizona to improve the achievement of students through teacher preparation and teacher professional development.  She also developed with philanthropist T. Denny Sanford a plan to address the most pressing educational needs of our time. With an $18.85 million investment, the Sanford Education Project advances a partnership with Teach for America and Teachers College.

In the past, Dr. Koerner was either Principal Investigator or Co-director of several grant funded programs; including, Title II Grant for Enhancement of Teacher Education; Improving Teacher Quality Grant with the Institute for Community Inclusion, “Physics and Mathematics in Early Childhood Education,” and a literacy partnership grant with READ Boston.

She was appointed to serve as Program Chair for Division K Teacher Education for the American Education Research Association 2006 Conference, currently serves as Chair of the Mentoring Committee for Division K and also serves on the Board of Examiners for National Council for Accreditation for Teacher Education. She is Vice Chair of the Board of Directors, AZ K-12 Center for Professional Development. In all of her positions, Dean Koerner has worked with schools to establish innovative teacher education programs for pre-service and in-service teachers.
