Bio

Dr. Mari E. Koerner received her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago in Curriculum and Instruction.  She has held faculty and administrative positions at Roosevelt University in Chicago and the University of Massachusetts Boston. She was appointed Professor in and Dean of the College of Teacher Education and Leadership at Arizona State University’s West Campus in July, 2006 and, after the combination of three colleges of education at ASU, she was appointed Dean of the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College in 2010. MLFTC is one of the largest education colleges in the country with over 6000 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students and is currently ranked as 18th of all graduate education schools in U.S. News & World Report.

Dr. Koerner has reached out to the national professional community by publishing in professional education journals and by presenting at major education conferences regarding teacher preparation. She has been either Principal Investigator or Co-director of many grant funded programs; including, Title II Grant for Enhancement of Teacher Education; Improving Teacher Quality Grant with the Institute for Community Inclusion, “Physics and Mathematics in Early Childhood Education,” ITQ Grant at ASU ($34M) and a Teacher Incentive Fund Grant at ASU ($44M).

Dr. Koerner serves on four Boards: Phoenix Teach for America, Desert Botanical Gardens, Rodel Foundation, and the Arizona Business and Education Council. Often asked to serve on national and local panels and review boards, she was a member of the Arizona Board of Education Task Force, where she helped to implement SB 1040 which mandates teacher and principal evaluations and, nationally, the TPID National Coordinating Center Accreditation Workgroup which is setting policy for “at risk” college students. She testified about teacher education and the Teacher Quality Partnership grants to the United States Senate committee, Health, Education, Labor and Pensions in February, in February, 2014.
