Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College is changing their name, effective Fall 2025. The new name is Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation.

Education is not confined to schools or the first part of our lives; people learn across settings and at all ages. You can tailor your studies to your developing professional interests and gain work experience through a series of internships.

Program description

Learning happens everywhere and at all ages. The Bachelor of Arts in Education program in educational studies provides a flexible pathway to a bachelor's degree for students who want to work with children, youth and adults within nonprofit settings, community-based organizations, civic organizations and businesses. Students develop practical skills aligned with workforce demands, including facilitating learning experiences with, and for, diverse people in different contexts. They also develop skills for effective communication, collaboration, critical thinking, leadership, advocacy and innovation --- all of which are essential to educators working across professional contexts.

The educational studies curriculum prepares graduates to serve in a variety of roles in educational settings. Additional benefits include:

  • Applied learning experiences, including a two-semester internship, provide opportunities for developing creative problem-solving, effective communication, collaboration and leadership skills that can be leveraged to secure employment after graduation.
  • Flexible learning options are offered that accommodate diverse schedules and preferences, supported by engaged faculty and knowledgeable advisors.
  • Students develop relationships with prospective employers during the program through embedded learning experiences and partnerships.
  • The program can be a pathway to one of three accelerated bachelor's to master's degree programs, which provide students with the opportunity to secure a master's degree in a single year. Two of the programs lead to teacher certification.

While a shared set of learning objectives unites educational studies students, each student also has the ability to curate a unique educational experience tailored to their professional interests and the opportunity to explore new areas of interest.

An educational studies minor is also available to ASU students in other degree programs.

This program does not lead to teacher certification. However, students enrolled in the BAE in educational studies can secure certification by pursuing one of the accelerated master's programs that lead to certification.

Global opportunities
Global experience

Because of climate change, geopolitical instability or economic factors, the United Nations and other institutions predict that migration is expected to increase globally for the foreseeable future. Learners will migrate to new communities. Increasingly, educators will be asked to meet the needs of students who speak languages other than English and who bring a variety of cultures into classrooms and learning environments. Education students who participate in study abroad programs can prepare for this reality by engaging in Global Education programs, where they can expand their notion of normal schooling and deepen their understanding of how to foster inclusive and inspiring learning environments.

Career opportunities

Graduates hold a versatile degree that qualifies them for a variety of career paths in education, including roles at nonprofit organizations, community institutions, civic organizations and businesses.

Nearly 90% of alumni report being employed three months after graduation in various roles across multiple sectors, including:

  • education sector
  • health care sector
  • nonprofit sector
  • private sector
  • social services sector

Example job titles and salaries listed below are not necessarily entry level, and students should take into consideration how years of experience and geographical location may affect pay scales. Some jobs also may require advanced degrees, certifications or state-specific licensure.
