Program description

The Bachelor of Arts program in music offers students a well-rounded liberal arts education with a strong foundation in music theory and history. Through lessons on their primary instrument and a comprehensive curriculum, students explore music as a reflection of human history, cultural heritage and social behavior. This flexible degree can be combined with another major or minor at ASU, enabling students to tailor their academic journey to their specific interests and career goals.

Curriculum
Concurrent program options
Students pursuing concurrent degrees (also known as a “double major”) earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. Working with their academic advisors, students can create their own concurrent degree combination. Some combinations are not possible due to high levels of overlap in curriculum.
Accelerated program options
This program allows students to obtain both a bachelor's and master's degree in as little as five years. It is offered as an accelerated bachelor's plus master's degree with:

Acceptance to the graduate program requires a separate application. Students typically receive approval to pursue the accelerated master’s during the junior year of their bachelor's degree program. Interested students can learn about eligibility requirements and how to apply.

Additional requirements:

Important: Applicants must submit an ASU application for undergraduate admission in addition to a separate School of Music, Dance and Theatre application.

Students must submit a separate music application which includes:

  • personal statement
  • resume detailing their engagement with music
  • an example of the applicant's musicianship (e.g., YouTube video recording, SoundCloud page, Demo CD, blog, podcast, compositions, research paper on music)
  • any other materials that showcase musicianship (repertoire list, additional examples of musicianship)

Students who wish to take studio instruction as part of the degree program must audition for the appropriate performance faculty members. Students choosing to audition for lessons should prepare the audition repertoire and sign up for an audition in the music application as indicated on the School of Music, Dance and Theatre website.

Transfer admission requirements:

Transfer applicants: Transfer of courses from other accredited institutions is subject to the existence of parallel and equal courses in the college's curriculum and to departmental or school evaluation of studio and class piano courses with respect to performance standards.

Every candidate for the bachelor's degree must earn a minimum of 30 hours in resident credit at ASU. Transfer students enrolled in the institute must complete a minimum of 15 resident credit hours in the major as approved by the faculty.

A current ASU student should submit the separate School of Music, Dance and Theatre supplemental application and adhere to the deadlines listed above.   • Analyze key creative and artistic processes from at least two musical styles and historical periods.
  • Analyze specific musical products within the context of a specific historic or cultural tradition.
  • Write research papers applying the conventions of scholarly discourse in music.

What are accelerated programs?
Accelerated programs allow students the opportunity to expedite the completion of their degree.

3 year programs

These programs allow students to fast-track their studies after admission and earn a bachelor's degree in three years or fewer while participating in the same high-quality educational experience of a 4-year option. Students should talk to their academic advisor to get started.

Accelerated master's

These programs allow students to accelerate their studies to earn a bachelor's plus a master's degree in as few as five years (for some programs).

What are concurrent programs?
Concurrent degrees allow students to pursue their own personal or professional interests, earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. To add a concurrent degree to your existing degree, work with your academic advisor.
What are joint programs?
Joint programs, or jointly conferred degrees, are offered by more than one college and provide opportunities for students to take advantage of the academic strengths of two academic units. Upon graduation, students are awarded one degree and one diploma conferred by two colleges.
