Through this program, you'll be prepared for the future of industrial design practice.
The MID program in industrial design is a studio-based program in which students learn to design new products, systems, services, experiences or businesses by envisioning the future.
Students engage in research, brainstorming, idea visualization, prototyping and testing creative solutions that address different stakeholders' challenges while facing a new competitive industry environment. Students are encouraged to work in a transdisciplinary way, harnessing creativity to resolve problems and co-create solutions to improve the user experience, and capturing value for the industry while being responsible for the environment.
The program includes a design trip as a unique guided learning experience. Students visit places such as Tokyo, Milan or San Francisco, engaging at a deeper level with the industries and the industrial design practice; in doing so, they discover a more optimistic way of looking at the future by reframing problems as opportunities.
Graduates of this program are adept in using principles of design innovation, sustainability and systems thinking in problem-solving.
This program may be eligible for an Optional Practical Training extension for up to 36 months. This OPT work authorization term may help international students gain skills and experience in the U.S. Those interested in an OPT extension should review ASU degrees that qualify for the STEM-OPT extension at ASU's International Students and Scholars Center website.
The OPT extension only applies to students on an F-1 visa and does not apply to students completing the degree through ASU Online.

Requirements involve an average of 14 credit hours per semester. An internship is required during the summer prior to the final year. Additional deficiency coursework is required for students who are in the three-plus-year program; students should see the academic unit.

Applicants must fulfill the requirements of both the Graduate College and the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts.
Applicants are eligible to apply to the program if they have earned a bachelor's or master's degree from a regionally accredited institution.
Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in the last 60 hours of their first bachelor's degree program, or they must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in an applicable master's degree program.

Additional Application Information
An applicant whose native language is not English must provide proof of English proficiency through either the TOEFL or the IELTS regardless of their current residency. The minimum score for admission to the program is 80 on the TOEFL iBT® or an overall band score of 6.5 on the IELTS.

Admission to the program is selective. Admission cannot be deferred; students must enroll in the semester for which they are admitted, otherwise they need to go through the entire application process again for the year for which they are applying.
A GRE test is not required.
Applicants may be admitted to the two-year program with deficiencies if their previous coursework is not equivalent to the ASU undergraduate requirements and standards. Deficiencies must be completed prior to taking the required courses, if necessary; this may cause the student to take longer than two years to complete the program.
A personal interview is not required; however, a candidate wishing to visit the school is welcome and should make arrangements by contacting the department.

Applicants must hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree or equivalent or a graduate degree from a regionally accredited college or university of recognized standing in a related field such as industrial design or product design.
Admission requirements for the three-plus-year program
Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent from a regionally accredited college or university of recognized standing in a field other than industrial design.

Program learning outcomes identify what a student will learn or be able to do upon completion of their program. This program has the following program outcomes:
- Defend design research findings with a presentation of their unique design concepts
- Develop a new product concept design and present it in written and visual mediums to a committee of faculty and stakeholders.
- Perform professional-level tasks during their internship, including drafting, collaboration, and technical proficiency appropriate for design practice as determined by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).
Graduates are able to apply critical thinking and design skills in a variety of settings. They find positions in industry and academia and also develop startup ventures. Some examples include:

3 year programs
These programs allow students to fast-track their studies after admission and earn a bachelor's degree in three years or fewer while participating in the same high-quality educational experience of a 4-year option. Students should talk to their academic advisor to get started.
Accelerated master's
These programs allow students to accelerate their studies to earn a bachelor's plus a master's degree in as few as five years (for some programs).
Each program has requirements students must meet to be eligible for consideration. Acceptance to the graduate program requires a separate application. Students typically receive approval to pursue the accelerated master’s during the junior year of their bachelor's degree program.
