Offering an overview of film, television, video games and other digital media across a range of platforms, the Master of Advanced Study program in film and media studies helps students develop into more critically informed writers, teachers, storytellers and consumers of popular culture and media. Courses about film, television, video games and the internet enable students to build a strong understanding of how these media are made, tell stories and represent different social identities.
Delivered exclusively online, the MAS program explores the economic, social and cultural dimensions of U.S. media production within an interactive and flexible learning environment.

Applicants must fulfill the requirements of both the Graduate College and The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Applicants must have earned a bachelor's or master's degree from a regionally accredited institution.
Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in the last 60 hours of their first bachelor's degree program or a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in an applicable master's degree program.

Additional Application Information
An applicant whose native language is not English and has not graduated from an institution of higher learning in the U.S. must provide proof of English proficiency regardless of their current residency. Applications are not processed without valid proof of English proficiency; official scores must be sent to ASU for the application to be processed.
In a one-page, double-spaced statement of purpose, the applicant should explain how their goals and interests align with the focus of the program.
Applicants are asked to write and submit a three-page essay that assesses their knowledge of media theory and critical analysis skills. The subject of the essay is given in the online application. Applicants should demonstrate the ability to write well and construct a persuasive critical argument. Appropriate secondary sources should be used in this essay.
While letters of recommendation are optional, applicants may include two or three letters in their application. Recommenders should be former teachers or supervisors who address the applicant's academic performance, motivation and character.

Program learning outcomes identify what a student will learn or be able to do upon completion of their program. This program has the following program outcomes:
- Graduates of this program will be able to engage theory and apply key concepts in film and media studies.
- Students will be able to identify, evaluate and integrate appropriate primary and secondary sources in relation to the study of media.
- Graduates will be able to analyze the cultural, economic, political and technological factors that influence media production, reception and analysis.

3 year programs
These programs allow students to fast-track their studies after admission and earn a bachelor's degree in three years or fewer while participating in the same high-quality educational experience of a 4-year option. Students should talk to their academic advisor to get started.
Accelerated master's
These programs allow students to accelerate their studies to earn a bachelor's plus a master's degree in as few as five years (for some programs).
Each program has requirements students must meet to be eligible for consideration. Acceptance to the graduate program requires a separate application. Students typically receive approval to pursue the accelerated master’s during the junior year of their bachelor's degree program.
