Study the Italian language and Italy's rich history, culture and cuisine, and develop research and communication skills that come from fluency in multiple languages. Prepare for a career in one of the many industries influenced by Italian customs and traditions, such as fashion, design, sustainability and manufacturing.
In the Bachelor of Arts program in Italian, students learn to speak, write, read and comprehend Italian. They develop the ability to think critically, learn about and appreciate the historical and contemporary cultures of the Italian peninsula and their relationship to other global traditions, and develop empathy as globally informed leaders.
Students complete courses on topics such as:

- literature
- religion
Students have a choice of four faculty-directed programs in Italy. In their chosen program, students can focus on developing their linguistic skills and learn more about Italy's contemporary responses to global challenges, such as natural disasters and the industrialized food system.

Program learning outcomes identify what a student will learn or be able to do upon completion of their program. This program has the following program outcomes:
- Effectively communicate orally and in writing in Italian at the Advanced level standards according to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Proficiency Guidelines.
- Analyze current social and environmental challenges in Italy and across cultures.
- Effectively communicate research findings through different media and platforms.
Students have the opportunity to be immersed in the Italian language and culture through a Global Education program, a vital component to the major. Experience in Italy adds value to the degree, preparing students to take off in an exciting, multicultural career with valuable skills that employers seek, such as communication and problem-solving.
Students majoring in Italian can study in Italy while taking courses in a variety of areas.
Knowledge of multiple languages and having intercultural competencies enhance any occupation and offer graduates many career opportunities. Language-intensive careers include:

3 year programs
These programs allow students to fast-track their studies after admission and earn a bachelor's degree in three years or fewer while participating in the same high-quality educational experience of a 4-year option. Students should talk to their academic advisor to get started.
Accelerated master's
These programs allow students to accelerate their studies to earn a bachelor's plus a master's degree in as few as five years (for some programs).
