The Bachelor of Applied Science program with a concentration in technical communication is a flexible program designed specifically for students who have earned an Associate of Applied Science degree from a regionally accredited institution. In this program, students combine the technical experience they have gained in their associate degree program with a broader education in skills in management, leadership, critical thinking and communication.
Technical communication is applied workplace communication that makes technical information understandable and available to many audiences. In this concentration, students learn how to produce, design and manage information using traditional and developing technologies.
This program may be eligible for an Optional Practical Training extension for up to 24 months. This OPT work authorization period may help international students gain skills and experience in the U.S. Those interested in an OPT extension should review ASU degrees that qualify for the STEM-OPT extension at ASU's International Students and Scholars Center website.
The OPT extension only applies to students on an F-1 visa and does not apply to students completing a degree through ASU Online.

Technology is connecting the world, and future technical communication professionals must be proficient in cross-cultural communication --- a skill well developed through study abroad. Through unique study abroad experiences across the globe, students gain valuable skills. Whether in a foreign country, in the U.S. or online, by participating in one of the more than 300 available Global Education programs, students expand their scope of learning beyond the classroom and gain hands-on experience in different and exciting cultures.
Many of the School of Applied Professional Studies programs allow students to earn credit toward their major for their experiences studying abroad.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the need for writers will increase by 5% during the next 10 years. Software and electronics companies, media corporations, financial institutions, government agencies, nonprofits and other areas will see an increased demand for writers.
Graduates of the program are prepared for careers as:
- advertising and promotions managers
- communications professors
- copy writers
- correspondence clerks
- court clerks
- desktop publishers
- editors
- media and communication workers
- proofreaders and copy markers

3 year programs
These programs allow students to fast-track their studies after admission and earn a bachelor's degree in three years or fewer while participating in the same high-quality educational experience of a 4-year option. Students should talk to their academic advisor to get started.
Accelerated master's
These programs allow students to accelerate their studies to earn a bachelor's plus a master's degree in as few as five years (for some programs).
Each program has requirements students must meet to be eligible for consideration. Acceptance to the graduate program requires a separate application. Students typically receive approval to pursue the accelerated master’s during the junior year of their bachelor's degree program. Interested students can learn about eligibility requirements and how to apply.
